India’s J1 visa for US tourists ‘could be cancelled’

India’s Immigration Department is considering a plan to cancel a two-year-old visa for people from the US to come to India.

J1 visas are used for US citizens and permanent residents who wish to work in India and do not have to pay the US-based minimum wage.

The move comes after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on January 30, making it easier for American workers to move to India as they become more skilled.

The Indian government has been lobbying hard to maintain a two year visa for Americans to work as it sees it as an economic lifeline for the country.
